• Reading Lately – May and June Edition

Did you know that there is a limit to the number of holds you can put on books at the library? Well, at ours there is, and I reached my limit a few weeks ago.  I know I’ve mentioned this before, but my reading life has changed drastically since I started placing books on hold and picking them up as they become available.   This also means that I often have more books than I have time to read.  Like right now.  Several are due and I haven’t even opened some of them yet!  And those 14 day loaners are really cramping my style.  Whoever is waiting for the ones…

  • For Your Weekend: Thoughtful Reads

The last weekend of June, and it’s our first full weekend of summer.  The cinnamon rolls are in the oven, Bradley’s parents are in town for one more day, and we’re hoping to head to the beach this morning to enjoy some play in the sand. It’s looking to be a great family day. I love to spend some extra time on the weekends reading words from others, so I’ve rounded up a few thoughtful reads for you today.   //The girls and I had a conversation last week about bikinis, so I found this interview/article by John Piper to be especially thought provoking. //Because I enjoy reading and hearing…

  • For Your Weekend : Inspiring Reads

This morning we’re hosting a yard sale, and I can’t tell you how giddy it makes me feel that we will be clearing our closets of excess stuff.  It also has made me a bit disgusted over how much excess there is.  Weeding out is healthy and necessary and my house will breathe a little easier tonight, I think.   The same is true for our souls.  Sitting in a few quiet moments, going for a run, and even reading words from other writers, allows this to happen for me.  It’s in those disciplines that I’m able to pray my thoughts to the Lord, turning over my anxiety, frustrations, questions, and…

  • For Your Weekend : Encouraging Reads

It’s a long weekend for many of us, and if you’re like me, days off like this always have me hoping for a few extra minutes to read.  I have several books I’m working through right now, but I still find writing on the internet to be encouraging as well.  Here are some posts I’ve gathered that I hope will bring some encouragement to you this weekend. What “For Better or For Worse” Really Means – Marian Vischer I Follow Close to You – Glenna Marshall Where I Want to Be – Christine Willard What Grown-ups Get to Do – Cynthia Stuckey And, last but not least, a series titled…

  • Reading Lately (March and April)

The past two months have felt a bit like a blur.  We’ve had a lot going on, many sleepless nights (thank you, Cooper), and my reading momentum has slowed down.  When I open a book after the kids are in bed, I usually make it about 5 pages and then I’m asleep.  We might have made a turn for the better now, and I’m finding my ability to read is improving.   Here’s what I read in March and April: For the Love, Jen Hatmaker.  This book came out last fall and I saw all the images and comments on social media but quite honestly, I just didn’t want to jump…

  • Reading Lately

Periodically I receive emails and messages with questions regarding book recommendations. Sometimes they are for specific topics, other times just books in general. So, I thought it would maybe be helpful to write posts as I read books, rather than waiting until the end of the year to write one final book list. One of my goals this year is to branch out and read genres of books that I wouldn’t typically pick up. I’ve had some goods ones this year, and a couple that I didn’t enjoy. I’ll try to share these posts every two months or so. To Live is Christ To Die is Gain. Highly recommend this one.…

  • 2016 Book List

If only you knew how many blog posts I have written in my head over the past month since my last post.  Someday (hopefully soon) I plan to get back into a writing groove–whatever that might look like–but for now, I thought I’d share with you what I’m planning to read in 2016. Not one to usually plan out these kinds of things, I decided to grab books from our bookshelf that I’ve never read.  Some have been given to us over the years, some I’ve purchased, and others Bradley has read.  There are probably hundreds of books that I would LIKE to buy right now, but before I jump on…

  • Day 31 :: For your Weekend- Links to wrap it up

I always finish off these October series feeling relieved but also energized.  This is the fifth year I’ve participated in this writing challenge and it’s also the first year that I had absolutely nothing written in advance.  I had some post titles and a few random thoughts, but that was about it.  And I was a little apprehensive about how it would go. I’m so thankful for the ones who graciously guest posted for me (Sherri, Heather, Martha, Callie, Bradley).  I love what each of them shared and it was especially helpful because I ended up being a single parent for the last two weeks of the month which significantly affected…

  • Day 24 :: For Your Weekend – Links on Loving Well

If anyone that I know loves well it is this boy. He knows no stranger.  He smiles and lights up any room he enters.  He adores his sisters.  He can’t get enough of his Grandparents when we Face Time. His favorite person to love?  His Daddy.  And he misses him like crazy right now.  While I finished making dinner last night, Mason was laying on the floor in the mudroom, looking out the back door and crying “Daddy!”  While it made me sad because he doesn’t understand why Bradley hasn’t been home, it also proved to me the depth of Mason’s love for his Daddy. We want our kids to…

  • Day 10 :: Learn from Others & Weekend Links

While I might have lessons that I want my daughters to learn and I desire to teach many of them, it’s also true that I can’t offer them everything they need to know.  In fact, just yesterday after a discussion about circumference and radius, my husband concluded that he would definitely be helping the girls with their math homework.  Beginning now. So, I hope to point them to the right people to learn things that I want them to know.  Resources for knowledge are everywhere, and one of the places that I turn these days is, obviously, the internet.  Cooking advice, sewing tutorials, fashion tips…you name it you can find…
