• From the Bookshelf: 18 Books on Parenting

        “What kinds of books do you read, Lauren?”   We were sitting in the living room of a group of people from church and everyone was going around sharing the latest book they had read.  Books were being rattled off that I had never heard of but everyone else was not only familiar with them, but had either read them or knew enough to engage in a discussion.  I nodded and was intrigued by their conversation, but was secretly hoping that no one would ask me to divulge my reading habits.   Sure enough, someone turned to me, and asked me the dreaded question.  I sort of gulped back and shyly responded, “Um,…

  • Reading Lately – May and June Edition

    Did you know that there is a limit to the number of holds you can put on books at the library? Well, at ours there is, and I reached my limit a few weeks ago.  I know I’ve mentioned this before, but my reading life has changed drastically since I started placing books on hold and picking them up as they become available.   This also means that I often have more books than I have time to read.  Like right now.  Several are due and I haven’t even opened some of them yet!  And those 14 day loaners are really cramping my style.  Whoever is waiting for the ones…

  • Reading Lately (March and April)

    The past two months have felt a bit like a blur.  We’ve had a lot going on, many sleepless nights (thank you, Cooper), and my reading momentum has slowed down.  When I open a book after the kids are in bed, I usually make it about 5 pages and then I’m asleep.  We might have made a turn for the better now, and I’m finding my ability to read is improving.   Here’s what I read in March and April: For the Love, Jen Hatmaker.  This book came out last fall and I saw all the images and comments on social media but quite honestly, I just didn’t want to jump…

  • Reading Lately

      Periodically I receive emails and messages with questions regarding book recommendations. Sometimes they are for specific topics, other times just books in general. So, I thought it would maybe be helpful to write posts as I read books, rather than waiting until the end of the year to write one final book list. One of my goals this year is to branch out and read genres of books that I wouldn’t typically pick up. I’ve had some goods ones this year, and a couple that I didn’t enjoy. I’ll try to share these posts every two months or so. To Live is Christ To Die is Gain. Highly recommend this one.…

  • 2016 Book List

    If only you knew how many blog posts I have written in my head over the past month since my last post.  Someday (hopefully soon) I plan to get back into a writing groove–whatever that might look like–but for now, I thought I’d share with you what I’m planning to read in 2016. Not one to usually plan out these kinds of things, I decided to grab books from our bookshelf that I’ve never read.  Some have been given to us over the years, some I’ve purchased, and others Bradley has read.  There are probably hundreds of books that I would LIKE to buy right now, but before I jump on…

  • Because It’s Tuesday :: A Giveaway

    Two weeks from today my oldest two girls are going to school.  One of them to First Grade, one to Kindergarten.  Both attending public school for the first time.  And while I’m confident this is the best decision for us right now (more on that in a later post, maybe), it’s still a bit disconcerting to think of them being away from me all day.  However, I can literally see the door of their school from my driveway, so there is some comfort in knowing that they are right next door. These two weeks are for getting everyone ready for a new routine, squeezing out a few more beach days…

  • The Books I’ve Visited Lately

    Some women buy shoes or purses; I buy books.  Bradley and I were laughing the other night because when we got married he read all.the.time.  Like, we would finish dinner and then he would disappear, only to be found in the bathroom, with yet another book.  (Some day I’ll share more about that season of life…).  Anyway, now I read way more than he does, just not in the bathroom :).   When he started teasing me a few months ago about how many books I was buying, I decided to try and reign that in a little.  I’ve been trying to read books we already have before buying new…

  • Reading Lately

    Each year I have a pile of books that I want to read, and as the year progresses, I add more to the list and tend to put off some of the older ones.  This year I’ve been trying to read books that I already own {with the exception of two}, before purchasing any new ones.  There are quite a few that I’d love to have copies of, but I’m sticking to my plan, and so far it’s going quite well. Here’s what I’ve been reading lately: //Grace Based Parenting, Tim Kimmel.  An excellent read for any parent or grandparent.  And it’s not all about forgetting discipline and structure in…

  • A Few Book Highlights

    We’re less than two months away from the end of 2012, which means I better get working on my book list!  I’ve only tackled a little bit from this pile that I shared with you in January, but I added a few more along the way.  This is what I’ve been reading. 1. Bloom: Finding Beauty in the Unexpected–A Memoir, by Kelle Hampton, is a memoir of her journey through having a child with Down Syndrome.  Kelle’s second daughter was born with Down Syndrome and this book is an excellent window into a mother’s heart.  I sobbed my way through this book, but it was very healing for me as…

  • Reading List for 2012 & A Book Recommendation

    The beginning of a new year is one of my favorite times.  I feel invigorated, driven, motivated, and excited for all that is in store.  This year has been a bit different, as we’ve been sick, my husband has been on a new schedule, and I’m already feeling VERY pregnant {still have 14 weeks to go!}.  However, even in the midst of all of that I’ve tried to carve out some time to think about this coming year and be more purposeful in how I spend my time.  It’s so easy to get on the computer and get lost on Facebook, my blog list, Pinterest, or even just sit and…
