Write It Down

Sometimes we shy away from what Scripture teaches because we don’t like what God has to say. It’s a sin as old as Eden. A sin which had severe consequences for Adam, Eve, all of God’s good creation, and extended to all mankind.

But God’s commands and instructions were always for his people’s good. The Lord established ways to help keep them faithful. His laws offered protection, security, provision, and peace. (His laws also included provision for redemption when they strayed, ultimately finding fulfillment in Jesus. Praise the Lord!).

Why am I telling you this in a series on marriage? Because God’s Word has specific things to say to wives.

But here’s the thing: we don’t seem to like what God says to wives. Submit? No way. Study Proverbs 31? That’s archaic. Be busy at home? I’d rather have more visible influence, thank you very much.

Instead of approaching the parts of God’s Word that speak directly to us, we turn away and try to discern our role in marriage through the lens of culture, feelings, and our personal experience.

Now, I’m not here to give you specific ways to apply these passages. But I am here to tell you to look into God’s Word.

One of the commands God gave the future kings of Israel was to write down a copy of the law and read it everyday of all the days of his life. Why? So he would learn to fear God by keeping and doing the law, in order to not turn aside from it (Deuteronomy 17:18-20).

Maybe one wise practice for a diligent wife is to write down all of God’s specific instructions for her. Study the passages that speak to wives and about wives. Look at the surrounding context. Pray for humility and a teachable spirit. Talk to your husband about ways to apply the truths you learn to your marriage.

Then, when you hear someone saying or teaching something contrary to God’s ways, you’ll be able to discern its error. You’ll be equipped to hold fast to God’s ways. It may not always feel great and you may be scorned by the world. But a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.
